This image is part of a Vermeer series.
She does not have any music on the music stand because as she said, ‘I have my husband’s love song memorized in my heart’.
I built the bench for her because I did not know if I could work in wood successfully. I built it as a prop. I had never worked in wood except maybe during wood shop in the eighth grade, so I bought the legs and built the bench, padded it and painted it, including painting the gold edging, just to see if I could do it.
In the late 1500’s, a dog meant chastity. There’s a little box on the table, and that’s for her – It is her virginity that she was giving to her husband as a wedding gift.
Vermeer inspires this image, and although most of his works had left-side lighting, we choose to use a naturally lit window on the right-hand side. Just as Vermeer used items that were present in his space in his painting, I use pieces present in my studio for my creation here and do so regularly.
