William Merritt Chase was an Impressionist painter in New York with a school that still exists today. Back then, it was difficult for women ever to get into art school, but he declared ‘not in my school’, and he let some of the very first women artists into his school. Georgia O’Keeffe was one of the first women in his class who went on to do great work.
The picture is intended as an homage to yellows. His family would receive gifts when he traveled to the Orient - kimonos and different items - they would often model many of the gifts he brought back.
